- In Virginia, insurers must offer small employers two insurance policies whose benefits are defined in law: a standard plan and an essential plan. The Essential and Standard Plans both offer coverage for office visits, hospital, limited prescription drug coverage, maternity, and well-child care. These plans do not cover state mandates. Standardization helps you compare differences in cost and coverage. Carriers can also offer to sell you non-standardized plans. Most small employers choose to purchase a non-standardized insurance policy.
