The Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS) is a state-designed program that provides health coverage to low-income children under the age of 19 who are not eligible for Medicaid and who have no health insurance.

  • A child whose family has a household income below 200% of the federal poverty level is eligible for FAMIS. For a family of three, this works out to an annual income of about $34,340, or a monthly income of about $2,862.
  • Benefits include hospital and physician services, emergency care, dental services, immunizations, mental health and substance abuse services, and prescriptions drugs.
  • Nominal copayments are required for medical services and prescriptions. The amount is based on the family’s size and income. Most copayments range from $2 to $5. Well-baby and well-child checkups do not require any copayments.
  • To apply, call the FAMIS Central Processing Unit at (866) 873-2647 or visit their website at http://www.famis.org/ or contact your local Department of Social Services Office.
