The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is a state program that provides health insurance to low-income families with children under the age of 19 who are not eligible for Medicaid and are uninsured.

  • A child who family has a household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level (FPL) is eligible for CHIP. For a family of 3, this works out to an annual income of about $34,340 or about $2,861 per month.
  • CHIP does not impose a pre-existing condition exclusion period. If a family meets the eligibility guidelines, a child’s pre-existing medical condition does not exclude him from coverage.
  • Benefits include doctor’s visits, hospital care, prescriptions, mental health, dental, vision, and hearing services.
  • To find out if you, or other members of your family, are eligible for the Children’s Health Insurance Program or for more information, call (800) 305-3064 or go to http://www.state.sd.us/social/medicaid/chip.
