- If you are self-employed with no other workers, you may be eligible to buy small group health plan coverage from Blue Cross Blue Shield. Blue Cross Blue Shield must sell “group-of-one” policies to sole proprietors. Other insurers can offer small group coverage to groups of one, but are not required to.
- You must qualify as a “sole proprietor” to be guaranteed a “group-of-one” policy from Blue Cross Blue Shield. To be considered a sole proprietor, you must be a Michigan resident, work at least 30 hours per week, and receive at least 50% of your taxable income from your business.
- Insurers are allowed to apply a 25% surcharge to premiums of self-employed sole proprietors.
- If you are self-employed and buy your own health insurance, you can deduct 100% of the cost of your premium from your federal income tax.
