Medical Security Plan (MSP) is a state-designed program that provides health coverage or premium assistance for Massachusetts residents receiving or eligible to receive unemployment benefits.
- To be eligibility, you must be a Massachusetts resident, become unemployed from a Massachusetts employer, be receiving unemployment benefits, and meet the income eligibility requirements (up to 400% FPL).
- Monthly premium subsidies are provided to unemployed residents who are eligible for COBRA and to those who are continuing their individual health insurance. The Division of Employment and Training currently pays for 80% of the actual premium paid up to $1,020 per month for a family plan and $430 per month for individual health insurance.
- If you lose your job and you are not eligible for COBRA or do not already have individual health insurance, you may be eligible for the direct coverage plan. This is a comprehensive benefits package provided to unemployed residents that includes doctor visits, hospital care, and treatment for mental health and substance abuse. There are no premiums for this coverage, however you will be responsible for some co-payments and deductibles for certain services provided.
