- As a small employer, you cannot be charged higher premiums because someone in your group is seriously ill. You can, however, be charged somewhat more due to the age and family size of those in your group and where your business is located. This is called modified community rating. These rules apply to all small group health plans. If you have any questions about your premiums, contact the Maryland Insurance Administration.
